What is DC hinting about the future of Earth 2?

Once again: Warning. There are SPOILERS about the current story of Earth 2 ahead.

The original premise of the New 52 interpretation of Earth 2 was about recreating the old Golden Age characters that lived in that universe pre-COIE from a modern perspective along with the mythos that previously existed along with them.

It started promising enough with really strong worldbuilding thanks to James Robinson although with an uneven execution that hindered a bit the potential about what the title could truly become but with enough heart and passion to make people invested in the new versions of these characters along with a recreation of such planet that would make it unique from the other worlds from the multiverse.

It's also necessary to mention that this incarnation of Earth 2 started with the planet being almost decimated by a war caused by the Apokolips forces lead by Steppenwolf who also managed to kill the Trinity of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman which allowed other heroes to be able to protect the world since they couldn't anymore.
It bears to repeat, the original premise and promise about the book was all about building, building the new world.

Then why do I get the uneasy feeling that Earth 2 is about to get destroyed?

I suppose that at this point I shouldn't need to point-out my current obsession with Earth 2 (which is above every other title currently aside from Green Arrow) as I've talked previously in several columns, but I'm not going to talk today about new books for the franchise, nor the flaws of the current run written by Tom Taylor.

No, today I'm going to talk about the little clues that a lot of series have been leaving during the course of the year about what will happen in future issues of the book in question along with its own universe.

What is DC hinting about the future of Earth 2?

Let's see about the current clues:
  1. The upcoming weekly is going to be called "World's End" which is not only a title created to be a counterpart of the current weekly "Futures End" but also obviously means that planets are about to die.
  2. The teaser image from such series shows Val hugging Power Girl possibly due that something terrible happened and Batman holding an unconscious Huntress on his arms. To be fair, this could simply mean that Helena Wayne is going to die (and frankly I wouldn't care at this point due to how uninteresting she is currently), but then there's also the image of worlds being destroyed above them and the other heroes from Earth 2 like Alan Scott and Doctor Fate losing the ring and helmet respectively which would resemble that they're going to lose their connection to their world.
  3. The New 52: Futures End series is telling the story of a future 5 Years Later from the current continuity where they're holding the refugees from a another world who came to Prime Earth after theirs got destroyed in a big war and there are several clues inside the series that they're refering to Earth 2.
  4. DC has mentioned several times that what's happening on Futures End has a relation to what's going to happen in Worlds End.
  5. Tom Taylor mentioned in Twitter that something huge was going to happen in issue 25 of Earth 2. He didn't mention if it was going to be something good or bad but based on his comments later and how he was anticipating the reaction of fans already, it's probably something bad.
These are some of the most prominent reasons why I believe that the days of the Earth 2 characters having their own world are numbered and I suppose that you would understand the logic behind such assumption.

But, I can emphasize this enough: I hope, HOPE this doesn't truly happen.

If I'm wrong about this I will happily eat my words and try to enjoy the series despite that it doesn't has the direction I was hoping for as I've mentioned previously.

However, if I'm right (again) I will only have to say this to the responsible persons of such idea: People who bought the series initially were expecting to see a whole new world with a lot of potential for exploring, a potential that wasn't even completely reached and there was a lot more to investigate and expand about the current mythos that existed in this universe. This was a quite rich planet where classic characters could have been reimagined in new and exciting ways with interesting new ideas and bold directions.

Nonetheless, if you destroy it you simply waste such potential just to create more drama, angst and well, destruction. You kill a world with its own voice and mythos to create an overused "refugees from another planet/dimension" plot which not only demonstrates that you don't care about the investment of the people who bought the series at first, but also that you just don't care about creating.

And yes, I suppose you could come with the argument "Oh, you didn't complaint when the New 52 happened and erased everything else", there's a difference. Those characters and series had years of development and it was only logical to try to get rid of some of the continuity to start once again with innovative concepts. Earth 2 on the other hand, didn't have such advantage, it barely had a year of reconstruction and exploration, and this probably means that we won't see characters such as Wildcat, Hourman, Doctor Midnite, The Crimson Avenger, etc.

In summary, if you do it you just perpetuate the mentality that the comic industry focuses more about destroying instead of creating, which is an ill-conceived notion.

Then again, I could be wrong and I'm actually obsessing over nothing. If that's the case I will be pretty content and you will be free to make fun of me.

Holy crap, this was an overly serious article. Next one will be a bit more entertaining I promise, something that's related to the current topic.

How about: What is worldbuilding and why should you implement it more in your stories?

See you next time!
