Some thoughts about Future State: Teen Titans #1

The Teen Titans are no longer together.

Nightwing has seen his team being destroyed over the years and he had enough, now united with a former enemy, his willing to put an end once for all.

Even more Future State and this one of the tie-ins that initially made me excited the most since I love the Teen Titans. Unfortunately, this is yet another mixed bag installment.

Tim Sheridan is the one in charge of this alternate future and there are some interesting ideas here. The dystopian future is already an overused setting but at the very least the lead-up to it is decently explained and some of the reinventions like CyBeast (a fusion of Cyborg and Beast Boy) are compelling enough because of their known friendship, in fact, most of the relationships are properly maintained and offer appropriate character moments.

That being said, I don't know if is the dialogue or overall execution but I find the way how the story flows overly-predictable. The jokes are eye-rolling (Yes, Dick means penis, hysterical) and the character moments don't go beyond what you usually expect. I particularly find the inclusion of Red X, a character from the Teen Titans animated series, odd and seems like it comes from a person who is mostly familiar with the team because of the show which would explain the derivative choices. Eh, at least the final page is an intriguing enough cliffhanger.

Rafa Sandoval's art is pretty good though with a fluid style and clear storytelling.

Average overall, hope the next one is better.
