Some thoughts about Future State: Batman/Superman #1

Is the relationship between the World's Finest as strong in the future?

A new organization called the False Face Society has appeared and now both Bruce and Clark will have to find out their true nature but this could be more dangerous than any of then anticipated.

If there's something that Future State works for, aside from telling alternate future stories, is to put new creators to test or even set-up upcoming runs, the latter is the case for writer Gene Luen Yang. I have a kinda erratic history with Yang due that I've found his whole work to be rather hit and miss, sometimes he can be dull like in the case of his Superman and The Terrifics run and other times he can be pretty good like New Super-Man work (although the latter only became good after a while admitedly). However, I was willing to give him another chance and see if he can nail these characters and so far he does an acceptable enough job I guess.

The premise is set in the future as the rest of the line but to be honest, it seems like Yang is making this as close to present time as possible since these Bruce and Clark act, and even look, pretty much like you expect them to. This is probably to prepare readers for his proper work but I feel like there should be a bit more imagination concerning this take. That being said, the plot itself does offer a few interesting ideas concerning the False Face Society with the typical political angle that you can expect from the writer (which is not necessarily bad, at least he's not as simple as Tom Taylor).

The characterization is adequate. Is not as on-point or entertaining as when Joshua Williamson was writing the protagonists but Yang gets the job done. However, there are a few derivative ideas like Superman saving a girl from suicide with his classic hopeful lines which, again, is pretty appropriate but at this point I think nobody is ever going to do a better job with the topic than Grant Morrison on All-Star Superman.

Ben Oliver's art is solid. Might seem a bit stiff at points but the storytelling is precise.

Decent beginning, hopefully it will get better later on.
