Some thoughts about Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman #1

Who can save the world now?

Solaris is back to Earth decided to destroy it once for all and Jon is the only one who can stop him. Meanwhile, Yara is dealing with more down to Earth problems.

Future State goes one and this time we're focusing on the power couple of Superman and Wonder Woman. For anyone who doesn't know, this pair had quite the history during the New 52 where they got their own title written by Charles Soule which was quite entertaining so it's cool they're being revisited in a way and Dan Watters is willing to bring back that entertainment... with mixed results.

First thing first, I don't dig the dynamic between Jon and Yara which is weird since I liked them fine enough during their respective series (especially Yara) and during their Justice League debut. However, for some reason Watters wants to make their interactions mostly politically-based which shouldn't be a bad thing per se except that the writer portrays them in the most predictable way possible with Superman being the naive hero who believes things are going fine in the world now and Wonder Woman being the unnecessarily brash about changing the world by force.

The biggest problem is Yara though since I really fell in love with her portrayal by Joelle Jones during her solo issue and here she see seems like a completely different character who is willing to punish corrupt politicians (and we all have been there) but again, is rather obnoxious about it and wants to be seen as the one who knows what's really happening in the world (basically yet another douchey Bronze Age Green Arrow). It's just an irritating portrayal.

The plot is decent since there's a contrast between the different mythos of the protagonists concerning their Sun Gods and in fact, the best parts of the issue are based on this. Sadly, they have to be shared with the rest.

Leila Del Duca's artwork is pretty unique with a pleasent and expressive style and clear storytelling.

Hit and miss chapter, shame since the rest have been good so far this week.
