Can Superman save a doomed world?
Russia is threatening to respond to the rise of the Metahumans but as always, Clark believes war needs to be prevented by any means. However, Ozymandias might have other plans in mind.
This definitely brought back quite a few ideas from the original Watchmen series.
Geoff Johns offers a new installment that is heavily focused on Superman. A war is incoming and metahumans like Firestorm are just making things worse. One of the most important aspects of this story is the characterization of Superman due that Johns undestand who the character is at his core by mentioning how he doesn't stand for America as much as for the whole world, how he sees the best on people and how conflicts between nations are not a good solution. This is as perfect as a portrayal as you can get and definitely makes you appreciate the hero in this bleak take on the DCU.
As I mentioned, many Watchmen themes are revisited here like the increasing conflict between the U.S.A. and Russia except that this time Metahumans are the center of it and the actions of some characters might actually justify that fear. Even more important though, the twist of Watchmen is also executed here showing that no matter universe, some people never change their colours.
Gary Frank returns to art duties and as usual, his work is outstanding, full of beautiful and expressive characters and a storytelling that elevates the script even more.
Great read, one of my favorites once again.
