How does Alfred deals with Batman?
A call completely changed the life in Wayne Manor and both Bruce and Alfred had to adapt to it but that doesn't mean things need to stay the same.
First of all, I thought that Tom Taylor was going to focus on the cliffhanger from the last Batman issue due to the involvement of Thomas Wayne as Batman. Mind you, that's not the Earth 2 Thomas Wayne which Taylor used to write but the connection would have been still appropriate.
Second, this is still an immensely satisfying issue.
The plot is mostly centered around Alfred and how he had to deal with the death of the Waynes in his own way. The characterization is really accurate due that the issue plays with many of the same themes that have been prominent in the character for years like the responsibility he feels concerning Bruce and how that ultimately turned him into the closest father figure Batman has. Taylor uses his expertize at delivering strong moments to create really emotional scenes based on this dynamic.
The plot itself is not that relevant. There's a new villain in Gotham City with his own gimmick but he mostly serves as an excuse to see what happens when Batman is severely injured and Alfred is the only one who can save him which, considering how it allows to the great scenes we see after it, it gets the job done. All of this culminates in an ending that feels really fulfilling and full of heart.
Otto Schmidt handles the art and his work is as stylish as ever, being able to replicate the character expressions perfectly depending on the situation and creating great action scenes.
Pretty good read, probably the most entertainment I've got from Batman in a while.
