The Joker has fought Batman for so long that he believes that the Dark Knight is the biggest evil that has infected the city and he has decided to end this once for all.
An Elseworlds story has just appeared and quite frankly, it has potential.
Sean Murphy delivers an opening chapter where he focus on the complex relationship between the Joker and Batman, about how one depends on the other and to be honest, this might be a problem in the normal continuity but considering that this takes place in another universe (or at least I assume it does), this is much more acceptable, particularly because of the things that actually happen here.
Yes, the idea of "Batman is just as bad as the villains he fights" has been explored several times in the past but here, the argument actually makes you believe that. Concepts like collateral damage, extreme violence and vigilantism are brought into the story in a pretty natural and logical way, one that you can see working in the real world despite of how insane everything around such idea can be in the plot itself. There are good points being presented here but they don't necessarily make Batman as the bad guy nor Joker as the good guy, is more complex than that.
There's also a certain inspiration from Tim Burton's Batman and Alan Moore's The Killing Joke here, especially in the portrayal of the Joker who goes by the last name "Napier" and apparently wanted to be a comedian at some point. The amalgam works for the universe overall.
Murphy's artwork is pretty fitting for the tone of the story and Batman in general, the dark atmosphere he provides really makes the best scenes from the book even more intense.
Quite exciting beginning, need to see more.
