Can Batwoman survive her own mind?
Kate has been trapped in an hallucination thanks to the Scarecrow and now she's forced to relive her past over and over again.
I think this is the perfect example of how art can actually save a story.
I mean, the story that Marguerite Bennett creates is not bad per se since it contains all the right beats from a typical Batwoman tale. Flashbacks to her past in a way that are connected to her current predicament except that this time such memories are getting distortioned and practically real due to the effects of the fear gas. Besides, she encounters one of her old enemies from Detective Comics I believe and he's also related to her classic themes about duty and family.
On the other hand, nothing in this story is particularly unique due for the already mentioned aspects. Flashbacks have become such a predictable Batwoman plot-point that at this point I'm surprised when they actually don't happen. Not to mention that there are also some scenes from that boring island whose name I can't remember and this just brings back some bad and forgettable memories. Also, the issue was lacking in content as well.
But the art makes this issue hard to pass, Fernando Blanco's work is amazing by making every little scene from the hallucination segment really creative, elevating and rather simplistic plot into a pretty remarkable one in terms of visuals.
I think this is good enough from a storytelling perspective, aside from that, not much.
