Some thoughts about Batman & the Outsiders Annual #1

Can Black Lightning help Katana with her mission?

Tatsu has been assigned with the mission of the saving the world inside of the Soultaker and Jefferson will have to help her protect the real one as well.

An Annual has arrived and shines in the usual aspects of this series and in others not so much.

Bryan Hill uses this installment to explore the relationship between Katana and Black Lightning and he does a good job at that. Their conversations are pretty in character considering their history, they act like old friends who understand and care for each other, the natual dialogue certainly helps to evoke such dynamic and is entertaining to see for the most part. The character work is one of the most enjoyable parts of this run.

The rest is not so good though since the action segments are not that engaging and they dedicate quite a bit of the Annual to them, they ultimately lead to more character work but they make the issue a bit light in content.

Max Raynor handles the art and is solid with a vibrant style that gets the characters and fight scenes nicely.

Not bad but not great, hope the next issue is better.
