Some thoughts about Mystik U #1

Can the future be changed?

All the mystical beings in the planet have died and to avoid this to happen, history will have to be rewritten but this might not be as easy as it sounds.

A new miniseries begins here. As most people should know, they have been quite a few attempts at making the supernatural characters from the DCU more popular since the New 52 but sadly many of the changes were not that successful. Alisa Kwitney however, is here to provide a different take on such direction and it seems to have potential so far.

At first it might seem like the writer is suiting the story in the post-Rebirth DCU but it matters very little at the end since she's following a completely new continuity that is created for a specific reason, a new continuity the presents a lot of entertaining possibilities by the way. Zatanna is reintroduced as a teenager who wants to learn more about her abilities after a terrible accident which will lead her to mysterious Mystic University, a place where people with similar abilities as her can learn about the magical world around them.

The characters are pretty solid and full of potential. There's Zatanna who is presented as the classic naive protagonist who suddenly feels a bit lost in a new world but it also includes classic figures like Sargon the Sorcerer, the Enchantress/June Moon and Sebastian Faust, all of them along with a bunch of new characters brings a completely different take of the mystical side of DC. The parallels with other typical stories like Harry Potter are quickly drawn and is hard to ignore from the multiple scenes where the cast assist to magic classes and investigate the strange beings that exist inside of the university.

The natural dialogue helps a lot to emphasize the multiple personalities that appear here and the creativity in terms of how all the concepts are implemented into the story is also appreciated. The plot manages to progress at a nice pace and includes an interesting mystery towards the end.

Mike Norton provides the pencils and is really good looking, he has a really polished style that provides great expressions for the characters and detailed environments.

Solid beginning, hope the next one arrives soon.
