What will happen before the second semester starts?
Olive is feeling pretty lonely now that she's by herself in Gotham Academy. However, after meeting a new classmate, she will understand that there are worse things than just being alone.
This book starts once again people. Appropriately named "Second Semester" and handled by the same creative team, Gotham Academy returns by creating what initially appears to be a new status quo. How does it fare?
Pretty well thankfully.
Brenden Fletcher, Becky Cloonan and Karl Kerschl come up with an initial story where they focus on a new cast. Olive continues to be the main character and she's once again is presented as the reasonable and likable protagonist we have known since the last volume but this time we also meet Amy, who might as well be the complete antithesis of what Olive represents, a rebel who does more damage than anything else. There are also a new addition like Eric, a character we knew very little about during the previous book who might play a more important role here.
The sense of adventure continues by immediately putting Olive in a new mission where her personality automatically contrasts with Amy's about how they should handle it and while Amy might influence in the protagonist initially, she doesn't become a major one fortunately. The characterization and conflict are really well-executed.
Adam Archer is in charge of the art and his work has improved considerably since the last time by reflecting even more the style that Karl Kerschl created, is still not as good but it feels more polished and beautiful.
Pretty solid opening. Hope the following issues are just as entertaining.
