Who are the world's strangest superheroes?
Casey Brinke just wants to help people and there's no better way to start now once that a mysterious robot appears and needs her help to face a threat that affects the whole world.
This series is finally here people. Since the beginning of the New 52, people have been clamoring for the return of the classic Doom Patrol book featuring the well-know cast of bizarre characters facing the weirdest enemies imaginable. This time is handled by Gerard Way, how does it fare?
Weeeeell, is certainly inspired by Grant Morrison's run I guess?
Which is not really a bad thing, as most people know, Grant Morrison was pretty much the writer that popularized the team and made the book a cult classic which allowed for multiple incarnations. Way certainly follows a similar style by delivering a more supernatural feel to the book that dwells into the strange pretty quickly and focuses on new cast of characters that are quickly introduced along with the always present Robotman.
The issue follows a rather unconventional form of storytelling which is adequate based on the history of the series but at times I can't help but feel like is trying too hard, just being weird for the sake of being weird with segments and dialogue that seem too deep into their own pretense.
The story progresses at a nice pace though with the threat being presented quickly enough and the new mission and direction being appropriately delivered.
Nick Derington handles the artwork and is pretty good looking with a semi-cartoony style that follows the script and style in a great manner.
I still don't know what to think about this but let's see where it goes.
