What is the secret origin of Batwoman?
Kate has always admired Batman and was helped by her father to be more like him. In the present though, she will need to fight against her own partner and the people who are connected to him.
The new exploration of Batwoman's origin officially begins with, er, Batwoman Begins and I say "new" because this has been like the fourth time that we have seen her early days as a superhero being revisited which are quite a few considering she's not really an old character. Plus, this time is handled by the upcoming Batwoman creative team of James Tynion IV and Marguerite Bennett. How does it fare?
Solidly enough I would say.
As with most stories from this book, some of the scenes are suited in the past to create a contrast with the present and this time the attention goes to Kate and her relationship with her father. I was never a fan of the new, more villanous portrayal Kate's dad got but I'm glad the writers are trying to explain that he's not a total monster which gives me a bit of hope that their old dynamic will be reestablished.
The characterization is pretty solid which is thanks to the natural dialogue that perfectly reveals the characters' personalities and motivation without feeling like overexposition. Plus, some of the previous subplots of the title continue to be developed and connected to the current story. Is also appreciated that the writers understand that Batwoman's theme was mostly directed to the supernatural and so they introduce characters related to such theme.
Ben Oliver handles the artwork and his dark tones and semi realistic style are really fitting for the kind direction the book takes.
Promising beginning, let's hope it continues this way.
