Is this the end for Doctor Fate?
Thoth has summoned Khalid to fight a powerful horde of insects that are about to cause damage to his reign.
No seriously, is this the end? Because is pretty underwhelming.
And is not like this is something new for Paul Levitz who is known for his slow stories where barely anything happens chapter by chapter but even with that in mind, this is still quite barebones issue and especially a conclusion. The best aspects of this story is the whole supernatural scenery that is created but I'm not giving the writer credit for that.
Worst of all, the best part of the book, Khalid's relationship with his family and friends, was nowhere here. Nothing that could make you care about this whole conflict nor the sense of danger for the protagonist. It would have been much stronger if Levitz would have included a few of Khalid's love ones to give the ending some weight but he didn't and so, this turns out to be a borefest.
Brendan McCarthy handles the artwork and is the best part of the story since he manages to depict the most bizarre scenes of the plot perfectly with a pretty creative style.
Other than that, is a shame this book ended this way but is not really surprising.
