Some thoughts about Future State: Batman/Superman #2

Can Batman trust Superman?

The False Face Society has been corrupted and now Bruce and Clark will have to fight for their life but Bruce might think that his friend is not ready for even worse threats.

The set-up for Gene Luen Yang's upcoming run on Batman/Superman is over and while there are things to appreciate here, there are others that leave me a bit concerned.

I think the ideas are executed solidly with the False Face Society representing the typical social commentary that you can expect from Yang, not too deep but not too shallow either (or not too Garth Ennis but not too Tom Taylor if you want an accurate comparison) and he manages to includes a fan-favorite Batman villain in a way that feels logical and contributes to the progress of the plot.

My concern comes in the form of the dynamic between Bruce and Clark which I thought it was fine in the opening chapter but here is a bit off. Yang nails Clark's personality and voice decently, there are cool moments involving him as well, this doesn't come much of a surprise since Yang has experience with the Superman franchise, the biggest problems arrive when he writes Bruce since it seems like Yang is a little too fond of "Paranoid 90s Batman" since Bruce doesn't trust Clark for the new enemies they're going to face, sure, his reasons are less jerk-ish than the 90s incarnation but still bring unnecessary and forced conflict between the two.

Scott McDaniel handles the breakdowns while Ben Oliver and Stephen Segovia finish the artwork and the result is consistent enough despite of the different styles.

Not bad but I hope there are more and new developments in the future.
