Why did the Transformers go to Earth?
Optimus Prime wants to save Cybertron at all costs and to do so, he might have to commit actions that will haunt him for the rest of his life.
Here we have the return to the original continuity that was created during the first Transformers comic published by Marvel Comics. I have to admit that I'm not really familiar with the first book aside from a few key moments so this doesn't really mean much for me but I must say that this is still a decently executed book.
First of all, is good to have Simon Furman back in the franchise. I really loved the worldbuilding he did early on the first IDW continuity (aside from some heavyhandedness here and there) and considering his history with the original comic, it makes sense that he's the one handled its return. As you might imagine, this issue is suited before the events of the very first issue of the 1984 run and explains a few aspects that actually makes everything look more complex in retrospective.
The premise is centered around the reason why Optimus Prime traveled on the Ark to Earth and the twist at the end shows how much he was willing to sacrifice to save Cybertron from Megatron which in turn, also depicts a kinda grey side of him that was never shown before. Aside from that, the issue depicts a few characters like Punch/Counterpounch, Transformers Clones, among others and it gets the job done in terms of action and dialogue but is not that remarkable.
Guido Guidi handles the art and is really admirable how good he is at creating a similar style from the original run, is really reminiscent of the early comics, even the erroneous colours for some characters.
A decent read and set-up overall. Wouldn't mind to see more of this.
