What is the origin of everything?
Perpetua gave birth to some of the most important figures in the Multiverse but her purpose was darker than anyone else expected.
Yes, this was going to fail since the beginning but to be fair, is hard to put all the blame on James Tynion IV for a change.
This is all because of Scott Snyder's ill-conceived premise by creating Perpetua "The mother of the Monitor and Anti-Monitor" in the first place and opening a never-ending escalation of importance and power levels that rival most Shonen Animes. The "First Crisis" is not even that interesting to begin with and the reasons mentioned above are not the only ones, is just an utterly simplistic way to create conflict and the resolution is something that we already knew.
Worst of all is that, as I mentioned before, this makes old concepts less impressive than they initially were since now the Monitor and Anti-Monitor serve as the children of Perpetua who is not that intriguing of a character to begin with and thus, makes two key players of Crisis on Infinite Earths lesser-beings. The third son, the World Forger, is not even that important to the grand scheme of things, he's just there basically to bring yet another derivative addition to the mythos.
Also guess what? Perpetua is apparently not even the most powerful being in the Multiverse, there's someone else. Big surprise and I'm dreading this already.
Francis Manapul's artwork is pretty good as usual with his beautiful characters and storytelling.
Aside from that, terrible direction and is not getting better any time soon.
