Some thoughts about Vigilante: Southland #1

There's a new Vigilante in town.

Donny has been doing nothing but wasting his life for a while but once that his girlfriend suffers a terrible accident, he will need to take a new direction.

For people who don't know, Vigilante was character from the 80's created by Marv Wolfman whose premise was pretty much what you would expect from his name. There have been several Vigilantes over the course of the years in fact and this time is handled by Cary Phillips with a more political tone. How does it fare?

Weeeeell, is okay I guess, but not particularly impressive.

For one, the issue does a decent job at introducing the protagonist, his motivations and mission but to be honest, none of these aspects are interesting enough. I mean, the character was pretty much a bum who for some reason had a girlfriend who actually cared about him but he didn't care enough about her to support her until she died and that's enough of a motivation for him to start his career as Vigilante. Yes, this is a strong case of the "Women in Refrigerators" trope and to be honest, it doesn't make any of the members of the cast interesting since Donny barely has any character beyond that.

Even the social commentary is not as strong as it could have been. God knows that I'm not asking for Ben Percy's levels of political stupidity but show at least something more profound about what you're trying to say. There are mentions here and there but nothing really that makes you think.

And the story, not much to talk about. Is simply a mystery that is being explored really slowly.

Elena Casagrande's artwork is in fact the best aspect of this book due that she has a very detailed and expressive style that creates good character models along with strong storytelling.

Not the best but not the worst, is readable but don't expect anything more than that.
