Some thoughts about Nightwing #81

Who is hunting Nightwing?

Dick has finally met Heartless and he believes he can take him down despite of his powers but even if that's the case, his biggest challenge is about to come.

Okay, this one was admitedly interesting.

Tom Taylor offers a new chapter where he plays with the cliffhanger of the last one and now I realize that this run has more in common with Mark Waid's Daredevil than just the artstyle. Nightwing's fight against Heartless reminds me a lot of Waid's early run on The Man Without Fear, particularly how he handled pacing and fight segments where the dialogue and skills guide the flow of the battle. This is pretty solid stuff.

The good aspects don't stop there since there quite a few charming moments like when Dick asks for Bludhaven for help and the people who respond actually share names with some of the most prolific creators that have worked on the character like Tim Seeley, Dan Jurgens, Javier Fernandez, etc. This ultimately leads to a pretty intriguing development concerning one of the new antagonists, a development that I saw coming halfway mind you and could turn out to be a fake out but is intriguing nonetheless.

Then again, there are moments where it seems like Taylor tries to hard to be charming like when they start to name the protagonist's new dog. Is just too much of the same for Taylor.

Bruno Redondo is simply brilliant, I doubt this book would be half as good without him. As I mentioned before, his art reminds me a lot of Marcos Martin on Daredevil with a very choreographic storytelling that depicts every fight scene in a really detailed manner. The expressions and transition between panels are also greatly done.

Solid issue overall. Let's see how things turn out.
