Some thoughts about Wonder Girl #1

Can Wonder Girl get used to a new world and life?

Yara has just arrived to Brazil looking to connect to her roots but what she doesn't know is that several people, including deities, are going to get involved in this journey as well.

As I mentioned before, Future State was hit and a miss as a whole with really interesting new takes on characters along with pretty underwhelming and even downright bad premises and directions. Fortunately, Joelle Jones' Wonder Girl was easily the best of the bunch and it seems like DC thinks the same since they gave her own new series and thankfully, it seems like Jones is following the same entertaining path.

While the writer is continuing the same tone she cemented during her Future State work, she's actually following the set-up she created during Infinite Frontier #0 with Yara Flor going to Brazil.  Jones wastes no time by immediately delivering glances at Yara's past and showing what put her on this path while also integrating a few new characters into the mix (including what seems to be a new romantic interest that I'm not particularly fond of so far). There's a big emphasis on the Amazons and their pantheon of Gods including many relevants like Zeus, Ares and Hera while also playing with the new status quo of Themyscira after Infinite Frontier. Is a pretty content-packed opening issue.

This doesn't mean that is short of spectacle though since that's one of Jones' specialties. The action scenes are wonderfully told and paced with each new segment appropriately leading to the next one. The personality the creator injects here is palpable and is especially felt in Yara who is just as likable as before.

Jones' artwork remains as one of the biggest aspects of the title with beautiful and expressive characters along with a fantastic and creative storytelling that makes every scene a joy to watch.

Wonderful beginning, easily the best Wonder Woman-related book in years.
