Some thoughts about Superman #31

Can Superboy save his father?

The alien race that Superman has been trying to save has become corrupted and is up to Jon to figure out a way to help Clark before is too late.

Okay, this worked a little better than the last one.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson offers a new chapter where he expands on the threat on Thakkram. The escalation about the power of the Shadowbreed is done quite effectively making the desperation in each scene much greater, particularly once that one of the characters is revealed as a terrible person.

Even better are the parallels that are created between Jon and one of the characters introduced here, about never being able to live up to the expectations of being the son of Superman which is further emphasized when Jon has no choice but to live up to such expectations. I think this sort of themes work much better with what Johnson is currently doing in Action Comics.

Scott Godblewski's semi-cartoony art is still pretty pleasent to look at while following the story pretty appropriately.

Sean Lewis continues his worldbuilding of Metropolis focusing on even more obscure characters like Loose Cannon and Gangbuster and really, this is where Lewis' work shines the most by creating interesting characterization for people who rarely get the spotlight while also progressing the ongoing plot. Sami Basri's artwork is solid as usual although I don't think the colorist complements him that well.

Good read overall, can't wait for the next one.
