Some thoughts about Action Comics #1031

What are Mongul's plans?

People with a Kryptonian mark are suddenly appearing and Jon believes his father is still in danger, all of this because one of his biggest enemies is unleashing his hate towards everyone.

This series proves to be a quite entertaining once again.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson delivers a new chapter where he further expands the plot. Unlike the previous chapters which were more character-based, this one is focused on moving the story forward and does a pretty good job at it by creating an intriguing direction concerning the strange arrival of Kryptonian people. This allows for a good exploration of Kryptonian culture and surprisingly Atlantean culture too, all of this leading-up to a pretty compelling cliffhanger.

That's not to say that this issue lacks character work since Johnson's work still shines at that. There's a good understanding of Clark's character and how he's willing to talk before fight. Jon also gets a solid portrayal and, unlike Bendis, Johnson gives an appropriate explanation when Jon supposedly goes out of character like him being worried about his father. Plus, I'm glad that the writer did his homework and have an on-point characterization for both Murk and Vulko during the Aquaman segments. Not to mention that there's a big emphasis on building-up Mongul as a proper threat.

Daniel Sampere continues to improve his work by creating great expressions and strong action scenes.

Good read, hope the book continues this path.
