Some thoughts about Stargirl: Spring Break Special #1

Whatever happened to the Seven Soldiers of Victory?

Courtney can't wait to hear more about what happened to Pat's original team but by doing so, she will uncover a mystery that has been hiding for decades and is up to her and Emiko Queen to fin the truth.

This has taken quite a while, more than you probably think.

Geoff Johns has always been fond of Stargirl which is pretty obvious since he created her in memory of his sister who sadly passed away. However, this is not the first time he tries to bring back the character after years, the first time was in the New 52 Justice League of America title way back in 2013 but due to the erratic nature of the New 52, some of the ideas were left behind.

That's not the case anymore since Johns is decided to return to some of the concepts that make his work so popular. First of all, we see the return of the Seven Soldiers of Victory which is not much of a surprise considering Johns' love for obscure characters (especially Golden Age characters) but this is also connected to Stargirl nicely due that the original Star-Spangled Kid was also part of the group. This allows for the return of Green Arrow (another hero that Johns was writing in JLA) and connects both the Golden Age incarnation and the present one in a way that makes a lot of sense although admitedly makes me a bit sad that there's no proper Golden Age Green Arrow.

The introduction to the rest of the cast goes more in the way of exposition but I still tolerate it because I just love when Johns revisits old characters and creates interesting sub-plots concerning their disappearance. Speaking of the rest of the team, I really dig how Courtney and Emiko's friendship is developed and is probably the best handled relationship the latter had since Jeff Lemire stopped writing her. Plus, I liked the explanation about how the adults protect them because the kids from the Seven Soldiers of Victory usually have a bad fate.

The plot progresses at an appropriate pace with many ideas being planted to be properly explored in the future, a future that Johns is bound to develop in the upcoming Stargirl series.

Todd Nauck handles the art and considering the time Courtney was created, the 90s semi-cartoony style is a nice fit and Nauck follows the story pretty clearly.

Oh, and if you thought that this is the end of Johns writing about the Golden Age, you're dead wrong since he's also creating sub-plots for an upcoming Justice Society of America book in which Per Degaton is threatening to return and I'm all for it. Bryan Hitch's widescreen style seems like a good fit too.

Promising overall, can't wait to see more of the future.
