When and how will Batman die?
Alfred can't help but be concerned about Bruce's ultimate fate which could come at any moment, especially once that he starts investigating a new case.
The famous team of Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, wildly known for their work on Stormwatch and The Authority from the defunct line Wildstorm, are reunited to tell a story about none other than the Caped Crusader. I have to admit that I wasn't really expecting them to work on this character in particular since Ellis is mostly known for his sci-fi work and Hitch for his widescreen style and neither of them really fit Batman. That being said, they still manage to make both themes fit effectively in this opening issue.
The story starts with a focus on the title which is topic that has been explored several times in the past: When will Batman die? The premise is not particularly new but the way how Ellis depicts is interesting enough since this is mostly seen from Alfred's perspective which leads to a compelling conversation between Bruce and him. If there's something that I tend to enjoy about Ellis' work is that he knows how to create engaging dynamics and the interaction between Bruce and Alfred is solidly done, presenting intriguing topics and setting-up the mystery that is about to start.
The investigation about the current case is also intriguing due that Ellis injects his sci-fi ideas here in a way that makes sense and reminds me a bit of his work on Moon Knight. Is not that far off from what we've seen from Batman and thus is appropriate.
Hitch's artwork is also exploited in an appropriate manner because the action is drawn in his classic widescreen style whenever Bruce fights common criminals which is done in an spectacular manner.
Good start, hope things continue this way.
