Gotham needs its White Knight once again.
After Jack Napier saved the city, Batman is not sure if they need him anymore and things are bound to become even worse once that the Joker recruits a zealot for his mission.
The sequel to one of the best Batman miniseries in recent years is finally here. I was a huge fan of Sean Murphy's original White Knight book due to its interesting premise and especially its somber tone. Now he's planning to follow all of the themes he worked on along with a few loose threads he left towards the end and this opening chapter does a good job at making you interested.
The story begins almost immediately where the last series ended with Jack Napier becoming the Joker once again and threatening the whole city. This time though, he's not planning to work on his own and he's going to hire somebody who could rival Batman. The best part as usual is the characterization since Murphy plays with logical ramifications for the whole cast, especially concerning Batman because he finally realized he wasn't the man who Gotham needed which is torturing him and probably will make him commit even worse decisions. This (even more) flawed take on Batman was one of the most unique aspects of White Knight and I'm glad is being further developed.
Joker plays an important role as I already mentioned but this time he's apparently not going to be the main antagonist (at least not initially) since the primary enemy right now is a classic Batman character who is going to face Bruce in upcoming issues. This actually makes a lot of sense considering his original role in the comics and his portrayal plays with a few keys aspects of his persona.
Murphy's artwork is once again outstanding thanks to his grim and gritty style that is perfect for the dark tone of this world and depicts the plot as clear as possible while including a lot of content.
Promising beginning, need to see more.
