Can Batgirl survive Killer Moth?
Barbara is suddenly having a hard time with one of her oldest enemies but that's far from her biggest concern since one of her oldest entities is about to return too.
As you might already know, I stopped paying attention to solicits a while ago so I wasn't aware that Mairghread Scott's run ended with the previous issue although in retrospective it kinda makes sense since that had a pretty conclusive feel all-around and my reaction to the new writer went pretty much like this:
"Cecil Catellucci? I think I've heard that name before..."
*Writer of Female Furies*
"Oh. Oh, God"
So yeah, this wasn't exactly a pleasent surprise. That being said, the writer doesn't go for the laughably heavyhanded tone from Female Furies (at least not for now) and instead decides to tell a more typical superhero story and I think it works fine in that regard. Castellucci picks up the pieces from Scott's finale and developes a few interesting aspects like the Terrible Trio which at first I thought she was completely ignoring the death of Shark from last issue but fortunately she mentions is a brand new Shark, all of this leads to a pretty intriguing revelation towards the end concerning an old character.
The rest of the cast from Scott's run remains (although I wish that the writer would reintroduce a few characters from Cameron/Fletcher/Tarr's era) and they seem to be in character. The conflict with Kiler Moth seems exciting but even more intriguing is the cliffhanger at the end which is the typical Year of the Villain stuff but reintroduces a classic name.
Carmine DiGiandomenico's artwork is really good thanks to his vibrant style and strong storytelling.
Not a bad beginning but let's see how it continues.
