The Teen Titans don't exactly have the greatest track record as a superhero team, can they change their reputation?
Red Robin, Wonder Girl, Raven, Beast Boy and Bunker are back to try to save people from some of the most dangerous and crazy menaces that may threaten their lifes and in this case being a group of terrorists who want to stop the operations of S.T.A.R. Labs but even if the Titans are able to stop them this might still not be over.
This is the beginning of a new volume handled by the creative team of Will Pfeifer and Keneth Rocafort. As I mentioned in the past, the last volume written by Scott Lobdell was basically a failed experiment since it started with promising potential but eventually was derailed by editorial mandates, half-baked ideas and poor execution. How does this new volume fares in comparison?
Well, it might be a bit soon to tell but it's definitely a competent beginning so far.
Will Pfeifer wastes no time by dealing with the previous history of the team nor who they exactly are, but this might be for the best since it makes this entry a perfect jumping-on point for new readers, you don't really need to know anything about these characters and still be pretty satisfied with the basic info that you get here.
Speaking about the story, it's something that holds some promise. A terrorist group is not anything new for the world of superheroes or fiction and fortunately the author acknowledges this by not taking them seriously, it's an interesting threat, no doubt about it but it's one that it's not afraid of making fun of itself.
The dialogue works pretty great to emphasize this point, it's pretty snappy at times and helps to make the story much more distinctive as well as giving each character a personality. If I had a nitpick though, is that Bunker's characterization seemed a little off considering that he's a person who was never bothered what people thought about his sexuality.
Keneth Rocafort is on art duties as I mentioned before and he makes this issue probably the best looking that the team had in the New 52. His characters are absolutely beautiful and each scene he draws oozes with creativity and uniqueness which allows to some pretty interesting storytelling choices.
Solid first installment definitely and it's one that makes me wonder where the story it's going.
