Some soldiers never stop fighting.
Meet Jared, an ex-soldier that despite of all the odds has survived every battle that he has encounter. He's not normal of course, he's a strange undead warrior who continues living no matter how badly he can get hurt and he will. Now, another soldier called Carmen King and him will have to deal with the kind of missions that only both of them can solve.
This is the beginning of a new book focusing on a classic DC property and I must say that it's a pretty impressive one.
I don't want to tell much about the story since I don't want to spoil it but it has a quite suprising opening segment that makes you believe that the story and characters are going to another direction that you would expect just to surprise you halfway.
This was pretty well-executed, both writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray create a story with a premise and tone that you rarely see in mainstream comics and in fact it's something you would most likely find in independent comics. It's a pretty unique tale that focuses on characters who are far from your usual superhero archetypes but still manage to be interesting and likable over the course of the story.
I should warn you that it's a quite violent tale too which you probably already guessed based simply on the title. The writers exploit the kind of character they're using to implement a horror-oriented style that it's quite appealing but never go to typical stereotypes that could encounter in such genre.
Scott Hampton s in charge of the artwork and he's work is absolutely what this series required. His style is both dark and realistic but also expressive enough to depict the characters' emotions perfectly, not to mention how well he able to portray such setting.
Excellent issue, frankly one of the best new series that DC has released so far.
