Some thoughts about Superman: Son of Kal-El #3

How can Jon Kent help the world?

Jon still fears that his father might be gone soon and so, he's trying to fill the void that Clark will leave. However, the world will offer much bigger challenges than he was expecting.

Well, this is getting pretty Tom Taylor.

What do I mean by that? Well, because the "political" commentary is getting a bit too much on the level of actual pandering more than anything else. Sure, a Superman that deals with social issues is appreciated but you can't help but feel like Taylor is trying to satisfy a very particular audience instead of actually saying something compelling (Again, Tom Taylor is not Garth Ennis). Oh, and speaking of pandering, how about those moments where Taylor especifies that Jon is saving the people's pets twice just to make the audience go "aaaaawwwww"? Jesus Christ, using that sort of stuff is starting to become a pretty predictable thing from him (I guess you could also call pandering that Jon's new friend is more impressed at Lois Lane than at Superman but let's give that a pass because of similar journalist careers).

About the plot, there's not much progression since most of the issue is devoted to the moments I already mentioned along with the plot-point of Superman dying (that has been developed in other Superman books for months now) and is a shame because I was looking forward to a more direct confrontation with Henry Bendix but no, Taylor felt like he needed to say something (whatever that was).

John Timms' artwork is decent with clear expressions and storytelling although his style might be a bit too fluid to the point where the characters look a bit deformed at times, nothing that ruins his work though.

Aside from that, yeah, didn't really dig this one and I'm not sure what to expect next.
