Some thoughts about Event Leviathan #1

Who is behind Leviathan?

Secret organizations around the world are starting to fall and everyone is starting to distrust everyone. Now is up to Batman and Lois Lane to gather a team of detectives to figure out what's actually happening.

The crossover event that Brian Bendis has been building up since the beginning of his Action Comics run is finally here. Is interesting to say the least that he used Superman of all characters to bring a bunch of street level obscure characters together to face a common threat and while this is not exactly an amazing beginning, it gets the job done at least.

The story opens with the meeting of Lois Lane and Batman which is an interesting concept in and of itself and they reference it themselves by saying how weird it is for them to be together without Clark. This leads to the investigation and escalation concerning the threat of Leviathan and how is attacking every single organization in the planet and credit where credit is due, Bendis knows how to sell Leviathan as a force to be reckoned with by creating a lot of tension between the different leaders of Spyral, Kobra and even A.R.G.U.S.

This leads me to one of my problems which is the characterization of Steve Trevor. Steve is portrayed as a kinda incompetent leader who can't lose it at any moment even willing to hurt common people like when he shoots Lois which seems incredibly wrong. I don't even want the heavily idealized (and quite bland to be frank) Steve that Greg Rucka wrote during his Wonder Woman run but him being portrayed like how Geoff Johns and Sterling Gates did during the New 52 days would have been perfect.

Speaking of which, Bendis' Green Arrow is... okay. There's nothing particularly bad about him (at least not to Steve levels) but again, he doesn't contribute much so far. Let's see how he develops.

Alex Maleev handles the artwork and he was a good choice I believe to depict the realistic scenarios of the situation thanks to his grim and gritty style that fits street level characters.

Decent opening. Hope things improve from now on.
