War has returned to Wonder Woman's world.
Diana has decided to have a moment of peace along with Steve but this won't last long due that Ares is threatening to come back one way or another.
A new era begins for Wonder Woman and this time is handled by an author who has found success in the past with quite a few heroines.
As some of you might know, I was quite the fan of G. Willow Wilson's work on Ms. Marvel (at least during their early stories) and that's because she managed to create a pretty entertaining and relatable character in the form of Kamala Khan and thus, I was pretty excited to see what she's able to do here.
That being said, what happens here is not that exciting by itself sadly.
Let's talk about the positives first. The dialogue is really good and that has always been one of the strongest points of Wilson's books, she can make characters talk naturally while also making their conversations engaging and even funny, my favorite moments here belong to the early scenes between Grail and Ares whose lines bring more personality to both than ever before. Speaking of which, Wilson is heavily following the direction the book took in the previous storylines with the inclusion of characters like the already mentioned ones which is something a bit complicated due that the last few arcs were not exactly the best.
And that's where the negatives start. Is possible that this is because Wilson had to follow the previous editorial mandates but the story presented here is not that interesting. She knows how to create a decent dynamic between Diana and Steve but I don't think that's enough to compensate the severe lack of content that is sadly present here, the issue ends in a pretty fast and abrupt way and it really needed more pages to truly make this first issue more worthy of being invested into.
Speaking of things that don't meet expectations, Cary Nord's art is not the best. Is not that it's bad, is serviceable enough in terms of style and follows the story adequately but is not that good looking and it especially pales in comparison to Terry Dodson's gorgeous cover.
So far, this is not that promising but hopefully, the next one will do a better job a reaching its potential.
