Some thoughts about Wonder Twins #1

Can the Wonder Twins get used to life on Earth?

Jayna and Zan have just arrived from Exxor and they will suddenly realize that things are very different in this new planet but they will also learn that they basically suffer the same problems that every other teenager does.

Another Mark Russell project has arrived and I obviously needed to talk about it. I have been a fan of his since his satirical take on The Flintstones and I also quite digged his more serious work on The Snagglepuss Chronicles, Russell certainly has a special talent that makes Hanna Barbera ideas shine and so, it was just logical for him to handle the Wonder Twins.

The Super Friends was Hanna Barbera's take on the Justice League in the 70s for a younger audience and that's where the Wonder Twins were born and understandably enough, they would be mocked for entire generations after it because of their ridiculous powers (Zan only turns into any form of water for God's sake). That being said, Russell manages to make a silly premise shine as always.

The Wonder Comics line hasn't been that impressive so far (mostly because Brian Bendis' work rarely is) but Russell finds a way to make these characters work in basically a completely different universe from the classic DCU, it serves mostly as a pastiche of the Super Friends universe where comical events happen and this is where Russell can execute his usual funny writing.

The story centers about how different Zan and Tanya feel now that they are on Earth. This is exemplified during the comparisons between the lives on Exxor and Earth which include some rather embarrasing events that are not universally accepted in our culture (complete sexual exhibitionism being the biggest one) and that of course is translated into typical teenager problems about not being accepted.

In fact, that's the whole point of the story. Is less of a tale about these characters proving they're worthy of being part of the Justice League and more about how they can survive they younger years and quite frankly I dig it. It allows for interesting and appropriate characterization while the predictable superheroics take a step aside to the point where they're completely mocked in many instances, hell, even one of the villains who was initially presented as a big threat is defeated in a pretty humourous and simple manner.

Stephen Byrne handles the art and is gorgeous thanks to his semi-cartoony style that replicates character expressions perfectly along with a pretty vibrant tone.

And that's the Wonder Twins, is funny and is realistic despite of its weird characters. Definitely invested in more.
