Some thoughts about Freedom Fighters #1

Is this the end of freedom?

The Ratzis managed to defeat the Freedom Fighters once for all and take over America but what they don't know is that their spirit will never die.

A new miniseries has started and is based on one of my favorite obscure teams. I have been a huge fan of the Freedom Fighters since the post-Infinite Crisis miniseries written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray and strangely enough, this one is pretty different from that version. In fact, this new incarnation has more in common with the original pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths incarnation where the Freedom Fighters had to fight an eternal war against the Nazis.

Robert Venditti implements the premise of the original and gives it an interesting twist. The actual first Freedom Fighters, the classic version I believe, were defeated by the Ratzis and that led to the classic status quo of this universe where the Nazis won the war and controlled America. Is a pretty interesting set-up that allows for the "legacy" theme that later incarnations utilized to be executed here as well. Not to mention that the writer manages to make you care for the first Freedom Fighters before their inevitable demise.

Plus, there are a few compelling concepts that are being developed here. The Freedom Fighters were originally part of Quality Comics from which Plastic Man also originated so he's also appropriately represented here... in a way that seems adequate for the universe. Plus, the idea that the team might be portrayed as terrorist because of the status quo of the planet presents a new intriguing direction for the team.

Eddy Barrows handles the art and is really solid with expressive characters and a dark tone the fits the script nicely.

Promising beginning, hope things continue this way.
