Whatever happened to Nightwing?
The world has finally found order for the most part and all of it is thanks to Dick Grayson and his plans to control metahumans but this could be for the worst once that one of his closest ones developes superpowers.
A new miniseries has arrived. For people who don't know, Kyle Higgins was the man responsible for the relaunch of Nightwing's title at the beginning of the New 52 reboot. Mind you, that book suffered from several problems generated by editorial mandates but despite of it, I always thought that Higgins had a pretty good voice and understanding of Dick Grayson. So, how does this beginning fare considering his previous work?
Well, solidly enough.
The premise is about the all classic dystopian future (although probably not connected to the one that James Tynion IV is doing in Detective Comics) this time created by Nightwing and his desire to get rid of the unnatural metahuman abilities. You can start seeing how things could go predictably immediately after hearing that concept, after all several X-Men comics have taken such idea in the past but Higgins does a decent enough job to differentiate it by focusing on the human side of Dick Grayson and showing an understandable justification for it that is still being explored.
That being said, I can't help but think that this kind premise would be much more fitting for Bruce considering his usual authoritarian believes, don't get me wrong, the only reason why I'm getting this is because is about Nightwing but it doesn't suit his classic characterization that much. However, there are solid developments coming from it and the conversations between Dick and Alfred seem on-point while of it builds-up to the compelling last page.
Trevor McCarthy handles the artwork and is pretty good looking although not as stylish as his previous works but it gets the job done in terms of storytelling.
Interesting stuff, let's see where it goes.
