Can Mister Miracle escape death again?
Shilo Norman has always felt out of place among the New Gods but once that the Black Racer appears, he will have to demonstrate that he's worthy of his role.
Yet another anniversary issue and it works solidly enough.
Reginald Hudlin brings the story of the new Black Racer and the connection he shares with Shilo Norman. The premise is mostly devoted to the Black Racer, about how he was created and his motivations, the way how the story explores the kind of person he is as well as how his humanity fights against the will of his mantle gets the job done, is not by any means impressive but is definitely adequate.
Shilo is basically a supporting character but still, he receives some interesting moments based on how he needs to follow the legacy of Scott Free and how he doesn't feel appropriate for the job. I wish this theme would have been explored a bit more since it had potential to deliver a more complex characterization.
Denys Cowan and Ryan Benjamin share the pencils and their work is pretty solid, pretty different from the usual Kirby style at times but they still feel fitting in some cosmic scenes.
Overall, I think this is a better read than Darkseid Special this week despite of not being quite great. Recommended.
