Who can oppose Darkseid?
A resistance has been trying to fight against the control of Apokolips's ruler but all of their attempts might be useless.
The anniversary of Jack Kirby continues, this time focused on probably his most important creation for DC Comics although this story is not as focused on Darkseid as you might think.
Yes, the story that Mark Evanier creates here is not really devoted to Darkseid as much as that is about the resistance that is fighting him. The premise itself has some potential since is interesting to see the perspective of people who live under the tyranny of their God and there are some solid aspects of characterization here and there.
The problem is that I don't feel that the story offers really complex character development for this cast to be invested enough in their fate. We know the basic of them and their motivations but they're not that compelling to focus so much time on them. Darkseid's presence is felt over the course of the story but just like the rest of the characters, he's not really deep. The sometimes heavyhanded dialogue doesn't help either.
Scott Kolins' artwork is pretty on-point though, he's surprisingly fitting at depicting Kirby's style with a lot of energy on the pages.
There's a second segment written by Paul Levitz about OMAC but just like most of Levitz' stories, it doesn't go beyond "passable". Phil Hester's storytelling helps a lot though.
Not bad but not great, readable at the very least.
