Some thoughts about Power Girl #1

Can Power Girl get used to a new life?

Kara Zor-El has gotten new powers, new friends and even a new name. However, things are going to change even further once that a new enemy attacks and that leads to Superman to take a tough decision concerning her.

Gotta be really honest here, I wasn't really a fan of Leah Williams' short stories about Power Girl. The writing itself is not necessarily bad but for some reason her Power Girl always seemed like it lacked the sense of humour, self-awareness and overall personality that defined her so much since Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner started writing her (This is especially obvious when they forced the name "Paige" on her just because "Karen" has become a negative meme at this point when a well-written PG wouldn't even care about that and just take the name at face value).

For those reasons you would think that I wasn't really excited to learn that Williams was still handling PG for this new ongoing but I was willing to give her a chance since I love the character so much but unfortunately a lot of those aspects are still present here.

Several of the same aspects that the writer created during her backup stories in Action Comics remain like the presence of Omen as the protagonist's best friend (a very random choice by the way) while getting used to her new status quo because of all the recent events that have happened in her life. Sadly, while the book is not bad at addressing the crossovers that changed PG's life (including the forgettable Lazarus Planet), is still doesn't do enough to make you invested that much into either her or Omen (I mean, the book barely explains you why they're best friends and this is pretty bad considering that this is the whole opening of a new series).

The superheroics are fine and present an actual decent villain but on the other hand, the issue feels like a very fast read that ends way too quick for its own good and not in a very exciting manner, is just your typical superhero cliffhanger to be honest (although I must admit I liked the image of Superman playing with PG's cat just before he was going to have a serious talk).

Eduardo Pansica handles the art and is decent, expressive enough characters and clear storytelling.

However, this is mostly a pretty underwhelming first issue. Is a shame since I really wanted to enjoy a new book featuring my favorite superheroine.
