Can Superman face the future?
Clark is still dealing with the absense of Lois and Jon but there's no time to mourn since the planet needs him and there's a bigger threat coming than he ever expected.
Here we go again. The proper beginning of a new era for Superman. As some of you might remember, I wasn't that much of a fan of how Brian Bendis' Man of Steel miniseries concluded since it seemed like it needed to force unnecessary drama into Clark's life just to launch a new direction for the character and book and thus I was a bit nervous about the start of this book.
That being said, this issue does at least a decent job from a bad situation.
Bendis handles the emotional repercussion of the loss of Clark's family in a pretty understandable way. Yes, it was forced and unneeded but it is still handled well from a character standpoint. What I liked the most from this issue though is how the writer implemented classic Superman problems in this story like when Clark is trying to have a conversation while the world constantly asks for his help which is something pretty accurate and works nicely on pages.
There's also a solid set-up concerning this new route, all granted by the Martian Manhunter who receives a pretty interesting portrayal. In some aspects it seems on-point (like him being the heart and soul of the Justice League) but in others it seems a bit off since it looks like he wants to force people to follow Superman into a new era which just doesn't seem right coming from someone as understanding as J'onn.
The conclusion is also intriguing but unfortunately connects it a bit too much to the last miniseries to my taste, I felt like it was too soon.
Ivan Reis handles the art and is fantastic as you might expect. Reis always knows how to make every strong scene even stronger, particularly the moments the focus on Superman dealing with threats. The storytelling and character models are perfect as well.
Not bad overall but intriguing enough. Let's see how it goes.
