Who can save the future?
The discovery of Aquaman's Trident has unchained a series of events that could change the 31st Century forever.
To answer the first question, not Brian Bendis.
And this should be especially obvious because of all the underwhelming events that lead to this series and this is a damn shame because Legion of Super-Heroes has been a pretty obscure property for most of its existence but sadly the set-up for the new book created an ill-conceived foundation that just doesn't have a lot of lasting power, especially because Bendis' name doesn't bring as many sales as it used to be.
But let's talk about the issue itself shall we? That's where the biggest problem is since Bendis delivers some of his worst tropes, overwritten dialogue that offers very little content at the same time. This opening chapter was supposed to bring new readers into the franchise but unfortunately does a poor job at creating an exciting jumping on-point and doesn't even depicts the future in an adequate way. It's a lot of "tell, don't show" but there's not even a lot to tell here, especially because the issue ends rather quickly.
Plus, there's the huge elephant in the room, the aging of Jon Kent for the sole purpose of starring in this book has been one of the worst ideas that I've seen in a while, not only because we lost one of the most likable kids in the DCU but also because Bendis extracted all of his personality while he added years to him. The current Jon is unrecognizable as a whole and once again, his role in this series barely has any relevance, it seems like Bendis just wanted him to be out of the Superman books which is bad for everyone.
Ryan Sook's artwork is stunning though, beautiful and expressive characters along with a vibrant style.
Aside from that, you don't miss anything skipping this. Just wait until this era ends.
