Some thoughts about Strange Adventures #12

Is this the end of the war?

Alanna is finally going to rescue her daughter after years of lies and no alien race is going to stop her. However, they will need to find a new way to live.

Yes, I missed the last chapter and that definitely was a huge miss because no doubt the biggest revelation of the book happened there and it was quite a surprise since, despite that it was telegraphed for a while Adam's real actions, the execution of such moment was nicely done for the most part, as usual for Tom King some of the character's behavior seems a bit forced but such twist still offered quite the punch.

This conclusion deals with the ramifications of such cliffhanger and if you're expecting a big battle or war against the Pykkts then you will be disappointed because that barely happens, this might be because of King's classic inability to create engaging final fights but at the same time, I can fault him for creating this kind of finale since this book hasn't really been about the war between worlds as much as how such event affected the main characters and their future.

This issue deals with that development in an appropriate manner because of the things that Alanna had to do to save her daughter and how that will guide their fate. Mister Terrific once again plays an important role in this and does it in a way that perfectly connects to the themes that King has been exploring about him and how Aleea and him will need each other in the future. The parallels between past and future remain as an important part of the storytelling and brings everything full circle.

Sure, there are some flaws. At times the typical King dialogue can feel a little forced and as I mentioned before, the plot is rather barebones (and the mystery itself was not that interesting) but they don't ruin what was a pretty competent book.

Mitch Gerads and Doc Shaner continue in their present and past sequences and their different styles still bring the gritty realism of today with the nostalgic and bright tone of yesterday.

Solid conclusion. Not perfect overall but at least better than other King books (most recently Rorschach).
