Some thoughts about One-Star Squadron #5

Who caused the fire?

Red Tornado is trying to figure out which of his associates wanted to destroy their company and while Power Girl might have the more obvious reasons, there's someone else with a much weaker motivation.

Once again, another example of great character study.

Mark Russell follows his story playing with the ramifications of Heroz4U being burned down. The writer plays with the idea of Power Girl being the biggest suspect, particularly because of the weird way she was portrayed early on the series but fortunately the writer realizes who she really is at her core and creates a much more appropriate characterization that feels satisfying. Red Tornado also gets a good portrayal demonstrating how well Russell can handle concepts of empathy and humanity despite that this has to be showcased by a frikking robot, Tornado is definitely the most sympathetic person here.

Less sympathetic is the actual culprit though who was also a pretty promiment character during this book and while his motivations are understandable, they don't justify at all what he did, especially because there's a much greater damage than he anticipated. Russell doesn't address if what happened next was right or wrong fortunately, it was just shown what Tornado's heart told him to do and in that sense is a fitting way to end this arc.

Steve Lieber remains in art duties and his work is still expressive and clean, perfect for what the writer attempts, especially when they portray the emotions from the cast.

Fantastic read, hope the conclusion follows this route.
