Some thoughts about Superman: Son of Kal-El #9

Can Nightwing help Superman like he did in the past?

Dick Grayson has arrived to Metropolis to find the people culprit of the dead of Risk and by doing so he will be involved in the case that Jon has been investigating all this time concerning Henry Bendix.

"Uuuuuggggghhhhh".

I know is not the most sophisticated way to express my feelings about this issue but it was first thing to come up to mind after reading it.

Tom Taylor has always especialized in trying to implement as many "charming" moments (or at least what he thinks are charming moments) as he can just to compensate the weakness of his plots and/or characterization but I think he broke his record in this chapter to the point it becomes a cringefest. There are hugs, typical Superman phrases, lollipops and moments of real closeness between Superman and Nightwing.

... Except that none of that really works since the "closeness" between the two is simply not believable no matter how much Taylor tries to force it to the audience. Apparently for Taylor is enough to write an Annual featuring the two characters in the past as an obvious prologue for this crossover to create such dynamic but we all know that it requires several stories (that sometimes take years) to actually build-up a true friendship. What this leads to is just a bunch of really awkward scenes because the writer tries to sell this team-up really, REALLY hard (Jon even calls Dick his hero at one point for Christ's sake) and I just can't help but feel a little embarrassed.

Also, stopped reading Nightwing because of similar issues but I'm also not a fan of killing Risk (a former Teen Titan) because I'm pretty sure that Taylor botched his death like he usually does.

Bringing Bruno Redondo to pencils was the right choice though, he's the best thing that the writer could do and he creates many beautiful scenes whose storytelling is a joy to watch.

I think is better to stop now. Nothing good will come from this.
