How can the new Batman help Gotham?
Luke Fox is trying to live the life his father always wanted but behind that mask he's trying to protect the city from its own people and even his best efforts might not be enough.
The proper beginning of the series is here and is a bit disappointing that this feels like yet another set-up just like issue 0.
That's not saying that this is bad though since John Ridley still touches upon a few interesting themes that make this Batman different from the classic one. Luke Fox is a compelling character due to his family and how he uses their status as an actual secret identity to hide his true job, mind you, I wish the conflict between his father and him was better explored due that this barely gives you an insight about it. Again, this is all a set-up.
The sections featuring Luke as the new Dark Knight are solidly done with a bigger emphasis on Batman trying to help the common people from Gotham which is an appropriate way to differenriate it Luke from Bruce since Lord knows that latter focused too much on supervillains in recent years. Unfortunately, it seems like we're going to go back to silly costumes next time but hopefully Ridley will try to give it a more realistic twist to it.
The dialogue is solid, plot is not that relevant since this is mostly dedicated to character work and planting the seeds for future developments which makes this issue feel a bit light in actual content.
Oliver Coipel handles the art and is great with a pretty vibrant tone for action scenes and clear character expressions.
Overall, not a bad issue 1 but I feel like it should have done more. Let's see how things progress next time.
