Who or what is the new monster of Gotham City?
Batman has found Killer Croc who might be the biggest hint about what's causing the recent murders but things are not going to get easy once they find the culprit.
Garth Ennis does what he does best, writing entertaining assholes.
I'm half-joking here since I love most of the stuff Ennis does (aside from when he goes to his more juvenile extremes) but seriously, if Ennis was going to write a serious story about Batman for once, there was no way that he wasn't going to be portrayed as one of the biggest assholes in existence. And is not only that Bruce here is probably at his most jerkish version but he's probably at his smartest version, the Batman here is a complete manipulator that loves to play with criminal's minds to make them do what he wants them to do. Sure, Ennis knows better that the only people who Batman mistreats here are actual bad people and so, this behavior doesn't feel as bothersome as it could be (Hell, considering how much the opposite happens in Batman comics, I think this is deserved).
This is pretty obvious during Bruce's conversation with Killer Croc who is clearly not smart enough to figure out what's actually happening, nor what his role in this whole murder case is but word by word Bruce starts guiding him towards the terrifying ending and it becomes more and more obvious that this Batman doesn't give a damn about what happens to his villains.
If there's a complaint I have, and this is not so much a complaint as much as an observation, I hope that Ennis delivers his trademarked exploration of humanity focusing on Bruce, about who he is as a person and what motivates him to keep going with this mission. Ennis being Ennis, is bound to create something unique.
Liam Sharp continues to offer bizarre illustrations that depict some of the strangest elements from Gotham City, especially the antagonists, is just a weirdly beautiful work to behold.
Good read, can't wait for the next one.
