Some thoughts about Superman #29

Is Jon Kent ready to be Superman?

After returning from the future, Jon is worried about his and his father's fate and this might come sooner than any of them expect.

Hey, Brian Bendis' Superman era is over! We should be celebrating right?!

... Right?

Well, not really because sadly some of his terrible decisions stay and that includes "Grown Jon" which unfortunately comes with the kind of angsty characterization that Bendis created for him. I'm not putting too much blame on Phillip Kennedy Johnson since he has to work with what he inherited but I wish he went with a different portrayal from the "young guy who is afraid of becoming Superman" that irks me so much.

That being said, there are a few interesting ideas going on here like how Jon takes his journey to the future in a different manner than how Bendis portrayed them, one that creates a logical direction for the main character (despite that is not the one I would prefer) and there's always that glance of hope that Johnson might fix all of this by returning Jon to his more beloved age. The inclusion of Amanda Waller in the plot is intriguing so far too.

Phil Hester is master at storytelling despite that his art might look a little rough at times, he depicts every scene perfectly.

There's a second feature written by Sean Lewis who also handled most of the Future of State: Superman of Metropolis stories and yeah, some of his flaws are still present here like the overwritten dialogue but on the other hand, he also concentrates his efforts on what made part of his work solid, the people of Metropolis. Yes, just like in Lewis' Guardian story, Bibbo here represents the common man who has the potential of becoming a hero and I believe the writer got a nice portrayal for the character despite that the execution might not be the best. Sami Basri's art is always pleasent to see although I don't think the colorist might not be the best fit for him here.

Overall, a compelling enough beginning. Let's see where it goes.
