Some thoughts about Batman/Superman #16

Batman and Superman will have to fight together for the first time once again.

In two different worlds, Bruce and Clark have their own adventures but their realities will ultimately have to clash with one another.

As you might know, I wasn't a big fan of Gene Luen Yang's Future State work which was a set-up to his proper work on this title, I thought it was fine but nothing particularly engaging and so, I wasn't really expecting much from his run here.

Well, I'm happy to say that this opening chapter exceeded my expectations at the very least.

Yang goes for basically the most creative first issues that this series has seen. The premise revolves around old movie-inspired storytelling where Golden Age versions of both Superman and Batman fight their own different threats and are involved in a bizarre mystery that finally converges both films showing that there are similarities between the two that were not initially perceived. Is the kind of inventive writing that Yang tried to pull-off in The Terrifics but never quite nailed until now.

There are several references going on here like the Golden Age Superman symbol, the gun-filled pulp adventures that Batman used to star in along with interesting new takes like a Venom-induced Alfred who suddenly clashes into the plot. Also, if there's something that I can always appreciate about Yang's work is that he's certainly not a fan of decompressed writing, most of his works have a lot of content per issue and this is no different since it has basically two issues worth of story in a single installment.

Ivan Reis' art is beautiful as always and he demonstrates how creative he can get in his storytelling with the panels representing old films because of the theme of the script. Really great work.

Promising beginning, hope things continue this way.
