Can Sam Wilson live up to the name of Captain America?
Sam has fought a lot of battles alongside the first Captain America but now he's not the Falcon anymore, now he's representing something bigger and he will need all the experience that he has gained over the years to stop all the criminals who are threatening what he believes in.
The beginning of this new volume handled by the same writer as the previous one. Rick Remender wrote the last series focusing on Steve Rogers and his journey that would end-up de-powering and turning him into an old man which allowed Sam Wilson, his usual partner, to take up his role. Is necessary to mention how hyped this change was, a lot of people, including myself, have been anticipating this change. So, does this premise and story live up to their potential?
I would say that fortunately yeah, they do.
Remender doesn't waste time and throws us immediately into the battle of Sam Wilson while giving us a short but concise explanation about his origins and motivations what lead him to follow the path of his former partner. The writer is building on what he previously established in the previous series while following a pretty logical next step for all the characters.
Sam remains as a pretty likable protagonist who has a high moral code and deserves to be called Captain America, you automatically are invested in his triumph over the villains he's fighting. Speaking of which, the villains are pretty entertaining and the issue concludes in a pretty exciting cliffhanger.
Stuart Immnonen handles art duties and his work is stunning. The action scenes and storytelling are perfectly clear and the characters look gorgeous.
This issue does exactly what a first issue should do, start from zero and make you interested in the characters and how the story will unfold. Really recommended.
