Some thoughts about Aquaman/The Flash: Voidsong #1

What does Aquaman and The Flash have in common?

Arthur and Barry's lives are getting more problematic due to their jobs and things are about to get even worse once that an alien threat affects the whole the world and they are the only two people left to save it.

I'm actually pretty surprised at how many team-ups involving Aquaman there are recently. First there was the Aquaman/Green Arrow book (which while not bad, wasn't particularly great) and now this. While the protagonists don't have much in common (in fact this is a theme that the title plays with), Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly bring an interesting premise along with some of their usual problems.

I'm not that much of a fan of the creative team of Lanzing and Kelly actually, they're far from bad but there are also issues about their work that keep appearing and sadly, they're also present here although not to such an extreme thankfully. The story centers around both Arthur and Barry having problems with their respective wives due to their roles as superheroes and this is where a complaint arrives due that, while I can see Arthur arguing with Mera, I find hard to believe that Barry would even respond to Iris being angry, especially because she wants to spend more time together and ESPECIALLY not swearing to her. This is not the only complaint though since Lanzing and Kelly's writing tends to be overwritten most of the time and there are parts where such heavyhanded execution is present but fortunately, not as much as some of their early works.

The plot itself allows for quite a few fun moments focusing on how different both Barry and Arthur are while the "countdown" theme leads to the antagonist of the story, creating a great style of presentation and makes the flow of the read much more engaging. Mind you, sometimes I feel like the plot of the issue doesn't require as many pages as it has but is not really bothersome.

Vasco Georgiev handles the art and is solid with expressive characters, vibrant style and precise storytelling.

Decent beginning, hope it gets better from here.
