Some thoughts about World of Krypton #1

What caused the destruction of Krypton before the explosion?

Jor-El is celebrating along with his family the birth of his niece but a sudden rebellion of his people will cause everything in their society start to collapse. This is the beginning of the end.

I was actually looking forward to this. I tend to enjoy Robert Venditti's work for the most part, it usually doesn't blow me away but he still presents interesting enough stories for me and I actually dug what he did with Kryptonian culture during his Hawkman series so a new miniseries about Krypton should be fitting for him and for the most part, this does deliver an intriguing beginning.

We see the start of a much bigger problem just beforewhat we all know happens at the end. We're introduced to the House of El and the people it consists of along with the different relationships they all have with one another. This allows for an interesting family dynamic that we rarely see from Jor-El and plants the seeds for an interesting character development for the whole cast.

The plot also offers compelling hints about where is actually going which involves references to other races, how their own people see the House of El and how they're starting to react to it. The story is mostly devoted to the characters and so the plot doesn't progress that much, is mostly a set-up where we're introduced to a few concepts and conflicts and in that sense it gets the job done.

... Except for one thing, there's a character that is an obvious villain here, a character named Kru-El.

Kru-El.

I seriously, seriously hope there's something more about him aside of being an obvious red flag because otherwise you have one of the worst names for an antagonist in existence.

Michael Avon Oeming handles the art and I'm big fan of his flexible style, he manages to make every scene interesting with a pretty cartoony look that is still quite brutal at times.

Decent overall, I just wish they would have named that guy anything else.
