Some thoughts about Batman #29

Will Gotham City survive the dark times they're currently facing?

Batman is doing his best to try to find and stop the Riddler from destroying the city. Unfortunately, the monstrous Doctor Death still believes in the plan that Nygma has in mind and will kill anyone who dares to cross in its way. Could Batman be able to save the city or will they have to deal with an even bigger disaster than the one they presently have?

This issue represents the conclusion of the Dark City storyarc from Scott Snyder's Zero Year saga and I must say that he delivers a pretty interesting ending for this storyline but not as great as his previous one.

I really appreciate how Snyder has been implementing aspects from Batman's early years with a modern perspective in his Zero Year story and this segment is no different. We see old rogues like Doctor Death under a new direction which makes them much more complex than before as well as presenting classic ones like the Riddler in a manner that makes them much more threatening that in the past and certainly promises big things for his future.

Why do I say that this conclusion is not as good as the one with the Red Hood? Well, while everything is bigger in scale, I felt like the final confrontation wasn't as personal, not to mention that we won't see Batman properly facing the Riddler here. What does that mean? You will have to find out.

As I mentioned in the past, Greg Capullo's pencils complement and reinforce Snyder's script perfectly. Everything looks so cinematic, gothic and epic that just gives a great sense of scale to the plot.

Anyway, this was a satisfying ending for this arc and it certainly creates nice developments for the next story. Let's see what this creative team offer in the future.
